This
bed and breakfast, at the site of the old Hoberg Resort, has
undergone major renovation. It is located at the base of Indian Head
Mountain and the entrance to Anza Borrego State Park, within hiking
distance to Palm Canyon and the park headquarters. The many date,
California fan, and Mexican fan palms around the grounds lend
atmosphere to the place and are the reason for the current name of
the lodge.
The Hoberg Resort was the first major lodge in Borrego Springs and
attracted the Hollywood movie crowd of the 1940s and 1950s. The
lodge burned in 1958 and was immediately rebuilt in an art-deco
style to reflect the glamour of Hollywood. The lodge changed hands
frequently, fell into disrepair, and the outlying bungalows on the
property were destroyed. In 1993, the current owners, Cynthia and
David Wood, took on the project of restoring the facility to its
original splendor.
They now have 10 restored rooms in the main lodge; all have private
baths with tub and shower combos. They have hand-crafted,
southwest-style king and queen-sized lodge-pole beds, some with
four-posters and some canopied, all with down comforters. Rooms have
stereo televisions, sofa chairs, and nice extra touches. The entire
lodge is non-smoking. Breakfast is served in the sun room, which has
a new stone fireplace, or on the patio, with a breath-taking view of
the Borrego Valley. Or, if you're into cocooning for the weekend,
you can have breakfast in bed.
The pool is their current project and, when it opens, prices at the
lodge will increase. You can enjoy casual dining at the Krazy Coyote
Saloon and Grille, a cup of coffee at the Roadrunner Espresso Bar,
or more formal dining at The Palms Restaurant--all on-site. The
Palms is constantly changing for the better. Stay here and see what
fun new changes the owners have made.
